Peripheral intravenous (PIV) access is often considered a simple, low-risk procedure compared to other types of vascular access. Yet, up to 47% of central line-associated bloodstream infections occur in patients with PIVs(1), which are the    leading known source of blood stream infections due to Staphylococcus aureus(2). Due to the significant complications and associated cost, it’s time we turn our attention to the care and maintenance of the PIV catheter.

Learning Objectives:
•    Identify current clinical standards addressing peripheral vascular care
•    Discuss clinical challenges, including blood stream infections, associated with peripheral catheter maintenance that can impact outcomes
•    Describe recommended practices and evidence-based interventions for peripheral catheter maintenance
•    Identify potential solutions to address these challenges and clinical studies that support these solutions
