Objectives:

1. Identify the driving factors for the HOB measure development and planned implementation.

2. Recognize the importance of diagnostic stewardship related to the root causes and preventability of HOB.

3. Explain the impact of poor diagnostic stewardship and blood culture contamination as one of the major causes of (false-positive) HOB.

4. Differentiate between skin common commensal and pathogenic organisms with blood culture contamination.

5. Estimate the clinical and economic impact that diagnostic error with blood culture contamination may have on the patient, the hospital and public health.
